Talking About the Future

Choose the future form that matches your meaning: a decision, a plan, an arrangement, or an action in progress.

✓ Notice the meaning✓ Build the form✓ Explain your choice
One clear idea: these forms can sometimes overlap. Use the context and the speaker’s meaning to choose; the clue words help, but they do not decide alone.
01 · SEE THE BIG PICTURE

Four future forms, four “cameras”

First, look at when the plan or action sits in relation to now.

Timeline comparing will, be going to, present continuous, and future continuous
Ask: Is the plan already made? Is it arranged? Or will the action be happening at a future time?
02 · QUICK VISUAL REVIEW

03 · BUILD THE SENTENCE

Four clear formulas

Keep the subject, helper, and main verb in the right order.

WILL decision now · offer · promise · opinion

Subject + will + base verb

The phone is ringing. I’ll answer it.

Subject + won’t + base verb · Will + subject + base verb?

BE GOING TO prior plan · intention · present evidence

Subject + am / is / are + going to + base verb

Look at those clouds. It’s going to rain.

Subject + am/is/are + not going to + base verb · Am/Is/Are + subject + going to + base verb?

PRESENT CONTINUOUS confirmed future arrangement

Subject + am / is / are + verb-ing + future time

We’re meeting Laura at the café at 7.

Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing · Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing?

FUTURE CONTINUOUS in progress at a future time

Subject + will be + verb-ing

At 8 tonight, I’ll be having dinner.

Subject + won’t be + verb-ing · Will + subject + be + verb-ing?

Quick check · show the four meanings
Right now: “I’ll call her now.” · Earlier decision: “I’m going to call her tonight.” · Confirmed time together: “I’m calling her at 7.” · In progress at 7:05: “I’ll be talking to her.”
05 · MAKE THE DIFFERENCE VISIBLE

One event, four meanings

The event is “study.” The camera and the speaker’s intention change.

Decision / offer now

I’ll study with you.

I’m deciding as we speak.
Plan already made

I’m going to study tonight.

The intention existed before now.
Organized arrangement

I’m studying with Laura at the library at 6.

Time, place, or people are arranged.
Action in progress then

At 6:30, I’ll be studying with Laura.

Picture the action at that future moment.
Plan vs arrangement: “I’m going to visit my aunt next month” tells us the intention. “I’m visiting my aunt at 3 on Saturday” presents a fixed arrangement.

Your turn: Make the same four sentences with travel, have dinner, or exercise. Say why each form fits.
